3 bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were spotted during first half hour of the survey, all observed to be searching for food whilst on the move. They were all initially separate from each-other however two of the dolphins joined up to form a group. Two of the dolphins were sighted about 1km from the harbour wall however the third dolphin came within 100m of the wall.

1 bottlenose dolphin

The dolphin was seen during the last half hour of the survey about 50m off the harbour wall, also searching for prey whilst on the move. It then travelled Northwest towards the fish factory and disappeared behind the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: overcast-dull, sea state 2, wind direction SW/W
4 bottlenose dolphins

Four dolphins were seen in the bay for almost the whole survey, displaying a range of behaviours. Two adults and a juvenile were first spotted travelling from the headland toward the cardinal buoy, foraging on the move. When they arrived at the buoy they began ‘milling’ type behaviour, performing tail slaps and leaps. Later in the survey a single adult was observed about 900m from the wall. It stayed in the area for over an hour, doing long duration dives – suggesting the dolphin was foraging at depth.
