25/06/15 36 Bottlenose Dolphins and Four Atlantic Grey Seals

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SW
4 Bottlenose dolphins

There were bottlenose dolphins throughout this survey. To begin with there was only one individual, but about 30 minutes into the survey a group of three with 2 juveniles also moved in near the cardinal marker deep diving and possibly foraging. The groups kept splitting and reforming and an hour into the survey some of the animals began displaying very energetic behaviour at the surface before travelling out of the harbour.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction NW
8 Bottlenose Dolphins

Two groups of two bottlenose dolphins were seen at the beginning of this survey but these animals left the harbour a few minutes after the survey started. Later on another four dolphins came in, milling at the surface of the water. Again this was two groups of two, and there was a juvenile in each group.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: fair-sunny, sea state 1, wind direction SE
8 bottlenose dolphins

There were no sightings for the majority of this survey but in the last half hour a group of five, a group of two and an individual came into the harbour from around the fish factory. A lot of different behaviours were seen from these groups including milling, deep diving and even splashy surfacing with some leaps from the large group and the individual.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 1, wind direction SSW-SSE
6 Bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

The group of 5 animals that were seen in the previous survey stayed into this survey foraging and chasing prey at the surface. Later on another two groups moved into the harbour north of the pier. About half way through the survey a grey seal was seen travelling west by the harbour wall, though it was only seen for a short period of time. Bottlenose dolphins remained in the survey area for the rest of the survey to the north east of the wall towards the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 2-1, wind direction S-SW
2 grey seals, 7 bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey a group of four bottlenose dolphins were milling at the surface of the water beyond the fish factory where they stayed for around half an hour. After they left, another bottlenose moved into the harbour a couple of hundred metres from the wall, and a grey seal was also spotted towards the fish factory. A second seal was seen later in the survey very close to the wall. After this there were no sightings for a while, until a group of two was seen just north of the cardinal marker doing long dives.

2hr survey. Start time: 17:00
Weather conditions: overcast-fair, sea state 1, wind direction S-SW
3 bottlenose dolphins and one grey seal.

Three bottlenose dolphins were seen about 15 minutes into the survey travelling west towards the fish factory. One of the animals left shortly after and the remaining two began to quickly move around at the surface of the water with a lot of white splash seen. The two animals split up but remained visible at the fish factory for another half hour, during which an Atlantic grey seal was seen swimming along the harbour wall before disappearing. In the last section of the survey one of the dolphins came right to the end of the harbour wall close in and milled at the surface regularly coming up to breathe.
