24/09/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seal

2 hour survey, start time: 09:00

9 bottlenose dolphins including 2 calves

After 30 minutes of surveying, one bottlenose dolphin was spotted travelling west towards the fish factory and was later spotted in the same area leaping and mingling at the surface. Five dolphins, including two calves were also spotted heading east towards the cardinal buoy where there were three other dolphins. The dolphins proceeded to stay in the area for the rest of the survey, heading east across the harbour towards the end.

8 bottlenose dolphins including 2 calves

Throughout the survey there were seven bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy where they were seen to be staying in the area, thought to be foraging at depth. One hour into the survey an eighth dolphin was spotted within the group but proceeded to leave again towards the end of the survey.

Weather conditions: Fair/sunny/overcast, sea state: 1, wind: NE
9 bottlenose dolphins including 3 calves

For the first hour and a half of the survey, nine bottlenose dolphins were spotted with three calves around the cardinal buoy, staying in the area and thought to be foraging at depth and mingling at the surface.  For the rest of the survey four bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, stayed at the cardinal buoy foraging but the rest of the dolphins had dispersed. A male Atlantic grey seal was also spotted in the water by the fish factory.
