24/06/15: 23 bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey: Start time 7:00

Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 1, wind direction S/SW

8 Bottlenose Dolphins

Right from the beginning there was a bottlenose dolphin foraging in the survey area straight out from the harbour wall. This individual swam out past the fish factory and out of site and was replaced by an individual by the cardinal buoy travelling west and another that travelled up to the harbour wall to forage. The dolphin at the harbour wall remained there for approximately half an hour before disappearing. About halfway through the survey four adult individuals were sighted about 1km out to sea leaping and milling at the surface for 15 minutes while a mother and juvenile travelled across from the cardinal buoy to the fish factory. The second half of the survey was very quiet, with nothing sighted until the last 10 minutes when an individual was spotted travelling toward the harbour wall.

2hr survey: Start time 9:00

Weather conditions: fair, sea state 1, wind direction W

1 Bottlenose Dolphin

During the first 15 minutes of this survey the same individual from the end of the 7am survey was sighted travelling from the harbour wall toward the cardinal buoy and out of site. There were no other sightings during the rest of this survey period.

2hr survey: Start time 11:00

Weather conditions: overcast/misty, sea state 1/2, wind direction W

5 Bottlenose Dolphins

There were no sightings during this survey until approximately 12:30 when a group of four dolphins were spotted far out to sea, north of the harbour wall. This group displayed behaviours such as mingling at the surface, leaping and tail slapping and remained in the survey area until the end of the two hour period. In the last 15 minutes another individual was spotted taking deep dives a little closer in towards the harbour.

2hr survey: Start time 13:00

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SW-SE

4 Bottlenose Dolphins

One bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging and taking deep dives in the first half an hour of the survey. This individual swam out of site past the fish factory and nothing was seen for the second half hour of the survey. Two individuals travelled into the harbour from the fish factory, one foraging while the other was spotted chasing fish at the surface. These behaviours continued for the rest of the two hour survey before both travelled individually to the cardinal buoy. In the last 15 minutes one more dolphin was sited further out to sea.

2hr survey: Start time 15:00

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 1/2, wind direction SW

4 Bottlenose Dolphins

At the beginning of the survey one individual was sighted travelling east across the survey area taking long dives before being joined by another dolphin after 15 minutes, swimming west toward the fish factory and out of sight. Another individual was identified briefly by the cardinal buoy halfway through the survey but disappeared after only 15 minutes. During the second half of the survey three individuals foraged north of the harbour wall for approximately an hour.

2hr survey: Start time 17:00

Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 1, wind direction N/A

5 Bottlenose Dolphins

Three individuals were sighted at the beginning of the survey foraging individually spaced between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy. One of these dolphins swam out to sea and was replaced by two individuals by the cardinal buoy while one swam in closer to the harbour wall to forage. During the second half of the survey one bottlenose dolphin remained in the survey area travelling between the harbour wall and the fish factory.
