24/05/2016: Bottlenose Dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seals

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction SE
4 Bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey a bottlenose dolphin was seen near the cardinal buoy. It was then joined by another individual and they were thought to be foraging at depth. Another two dolphins were seen travelling around the bay. The four dolphins spent the survey travelling in about of the bay and merging and splitting groups.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction NE/E
6 Bottlenose dolphins

Near the beginning of the survey, six bottlenose dolphins (including a calf) were observed taking long dives beneath the surface of the water and it was thought that they were foraging at depth. Four of the dolphins then travelled towards the fish factory headland and were seen foraging and milling around the surface until just after 10am.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 1/2, wind direction NE/E
6 Bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted throughout the majority of the survey; two groups of three were thought to be foraging at depth near the harbour wall to begin with, then one group travelled north out of the bay and the other group remained foraging within the survey area, but had moved more towards the cardinal marker. During the survey, photo ID took place and of the six dolphins, two individuals were recognised to be ‘Snowcap’ and her calf ‘Snowdon’; two dolphins which regularly visit the area. Herring gulls, razorbills, cormorants and jackdaws were also seen during the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 2/3, wind direction N
3 Bottlenose dolphins

Two adults and one juvenile bottlenose dolphins were seen taking long dives near the fish factory headland around 2pm, this behaviour was thought to indicate that the dolphins were foraging beneath the surface. Towards the end of the survey, the dolphins travelled east towards the cardinal marker and were not observed again during this survey. Herring gulls, greater black-backed gulls, jackdaws, razorbills, cormorants and guillemots were also observed during the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00

During this survey, no dolphins were observed in the bay. One Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water near the harbour wall at the beginning of the survey period. Gannets, rock pipits, oyster catchers, greater black-backed gulls and turnstones were also observed during the survey.
