23/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Rain/overcast/fair, sea state 2, wind direction SW/S

Bottlenose dolphins were seen for the entirety of this survey, with a female Atlantic grey seal also being spotted in the last fifteen minutes. A mother and calf were seen milling near the surface at the end of the harbour wall, another mother and calf seen travelling across the bay and a single dolphin foraging slightly offshore. Another dolphin joined the mother and calf pairing near the wall to forage among the boat moorings, while the other mother and calf pairing stopped in front of the cardinal marker to forage. The three dolphins near the wall started to leap and head slap, while the mother and calf near the cardinal disappeared. Three more dolphins, including a calf, then travelled into the bay from around the headland, before stopping in front of the harbour wall to forage, then leap and head slap. The Atlantic grey seal was observed swimming west in front of the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast/sunny, sea state 1, wind direction W/No wind/SW/S

Dolphins were once again seen for the entire of this survey, again with a female Atlantic grey seal being spotted bottling near the wall. Six dolphins, including two calves, were seen chasing fish in front of the wall. The group then split up, with three dolphins (including one calf) milling between the wall and cardinal marker, a mother and calf travelling east, one foraging offshore and one foraging to the right of the cardinal. Three dolphins, including one calf, were then observed foraging near the cardinal, another three including a calf leaping and head slapping offshore behind the cardinal and two dolphins foraging near the headland. The dolphins near the cardinal marker were then joined by another dolphin to form a group of seven including two calves, with three dolphins including one calf being observed chasing fish near the wall. The large group then split up once again, with a mother and calf remaining just behind the cardinal, three dolphins including one calf seen foraging near the headland and two dolphins foraging between the cardinal marker and the end of the reef.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/mist, sea state 1, wind direction SW/S

Dolphins were almost seen for the entire of this survey, with them not being seen for two of the fifteen minute intervals. A mother and calf were seen foraging near the cardinal marker, with another mother and calf foraging offshore behind the cardinal. The two then joined up to forage between the cardinal and harbour wall. A mother and calf were then seen foraging next to the cardinal, while two dolphins were observed leaping and splashing offshore behind the cardinal.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW/S

Dolphins were seen for nearly the entire of this survey, before disappearing for the last half an hour. A female Atlantic grey seal was also observed swimming west in front of the wall. Three dolphins, including one calf were observed leaping, splashing and milling around near the edge of the survey area behind the cardinal marker. They were joined by another dolphin in the last fifteen minutes where they were seen.
