22/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

During the first hour an Atlantic grey seal was seen off the cliffs towards the headland. After 75 mins a mother and calf entered the harbour area and started foraging. At times the calf was seen leaping.

The mother and calf continued to forage within the harbour only moving off towards the headland after half an hour. In the final half hour of the survey four bottlenose dolphins including a juvenile were seen off shore near the Cardinal Marker. Early in the survey there was a sighting of an Atlantic grey seal and then a second seal was present throughout the final hour.

Weather conditions: Rain/overcast, sea state 5/4, wind direction W

One bottlenose dolphin was spotted by the Cardinal Marker in the initial 15 minutes but then there were no further dolphin sightings. A female Atlantic grey seal was north of the harbour wall at the beginning of the watch. Later two female seals were spotted off the harbour wall.
