21/10/2015: 13 Bottlenose dolphins and 13 Atlantic grey seals

Five bottlenose dolphins and four Atlantic grey seals

At the start of this survey a male Atlantic grey seal was seen just in front of the harbour wall swimming NE towards the fish factory. Then half an hour later another grey seal was seen this time it was a female and it swam east in front of the harbour wall. About fifteen minutes later another female grey seal was seen swimming west in front of the harbour wall and also a group of three bottlenose dolphins, including a juvenile, were seen between the fish factory and the cardinal marker and travelled west. There were also another group of two dolphins also travelling west between the fish factory and the cardinal marker. These two groups of bottlenose dolphins then joined together and foraged between the fish factory and the cardinal marker before leaving the survey area. In the last fifteen minutes of this survey another male grey seal was spotted swimming east in front of the harbour wall.

Eight bottlenose dolphins and three Atlantic grey seals

Fifteen minutes into this survey a female grey seal was seen in the water in front of the harbour wall. Shortly afterwards a bottlenose dolphin was spotted travelling NW in front of the harbour wall. This dolphin then joined another and travelled SE. There was also a group of three dolphins including a calf traveling SE further offshore than the other group. Also in this period there was a female grey seal in front of the harbour wall and a male grey seal near the fish factory. In the next fifteen minutes the group of three dolphins split into a mother and calf group and a single individual. The mother and calf group travelled west towards the fish factory and the single individual also did the same. The other group of two dolphins also travelled west towards the fish factory. There were also three other groups of individual dolphins seen travelling west, with one further offshore than the other groups and two near the harbour wall. There was also a grey seal seen in front of the harbour wall. In the next fifteen minutes the mother and calf group was seen travelling west in front of the harbour wall and there were also three groups of single dolphins travelling west across the bay. There was also a single dolphin seen foraging around the cardinal marker. There was also a dolphin leaping between the fish factory and the harbour wall. In the next fifteen minutes two individual dolphins joined and travelled NE towards the cardinal marker. One individual dolphin was seen foraging in front of the harbour wall and another was seen travelling east towards the cardinal marker. Another dolphin was seen travelling west across the front of the harbour wall and the mother and calf group was also seen travelling west in front of the harbour wall. In the final fifteen minutes of this survey one dolphin was seen travelling west towards the fish factory whilst foraging and another individual was seen travelling NW from the harbour wall towards the fish factory. A grey seal was also seen near the harbour wall swimming NW.

Six Atlantic grey seals

About 45 minutes into this survey a male Atlantic grey seal was seen swimming south from the fish factory towards the harbour wall. Into the next fifteen minutes the same grey seal was spotted travelling east in front of the harbour wall. Then two more female grey seals were seen in front of the harbour wall with one travelling west in front of the harbour wall and the other bottling in the water. The female was then seen swimming NW along the coast towards the fish factory. Then another female grey seal was seen in front of the harbour wall. This same seal was also seen into the next fifteen minutes nearer the fish factory than before and was also joined by a male seal swimming west in front of the harbour wall.
