22/10/2014- Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Seven bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

At the start of the survey, four bottlenose dolphins including one calf were sighted foraging and leaping near the pier and cardinal buoy, an male Atlantic grey seal was also seen at this time, off Traeth Gwyn and the beginning of the reef. Half an hour into the survey a fifth bottlenose dolphin had joined the group near the cardinal buoy, and a further one joined shortly after, as two moved and began foraging beyond the reef, close into the coast. Throughout the second half of the survey dolphins remained in the bay, foraging near the cardinal buoy and amongst the bay moorings.

Fifteen minutes into the survey three bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging close to the harbour wall, off Traeth Dolau. They didn’t remain there for long however and nothing was seen for some time then, until the second half of the survey when an atlantic grey seal pup hauled itself out onto the beach amongst the harbour boat moorings.

One Atlantic grey seal

Throughout the survey a single Atlantic grey seal pup was seen on new quay beach amongst the harbour boat moorings. It returned to the sea in the last 15 minutes of the survey and swam around the harbour wall.

At the beginning of the survey the seal pup from previous surveys was hauled out on rocks near Dolau beach. It was seen half an hour in near the fish factory, and then left the bay. Three bottlenose dolphins were seen towards the end of the survey near the cardinal buoy, travelling determinedly west.
