22/10/12: Bottlenose dolphins

17 Bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey seven Bottlenose dolphins were spotted travelling towards the fish factory. These dolphins then disappeared around the headland.  Shortly after ten more dolphins were spotted in the bay and were thought to be foraging at depth and were also seen milling around at the surface. These dolphins stayed for the duration of the survey.

11 Bottlenose dolphins

Three Bottlenose dolphins were spotted near the fish factory at the start of the survey and then nothing was seen until the second half of the survey when four Bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling towards the Cardinal buoy. Four more dolphins were spotted shortly after and were thought to be foraging and they were also leaping and tail slapping. Two of these dolphins disappeared leaving six dolphins at the end of the survey.

Seven Bottlenose dolphins

Eight Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were spotted travelling towards the cardinal buoy at the start of the survey. They were thought to be foraging and then they disappeared back towards the fish factory.  At the start of the second half of the survey five Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were seen travelling from the fish factory. They were then joined by two other dolphins and they stayed near the fish factory whilst displaying foraging behaviour and leaping and tail slapping.

13 Bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Eleven Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were spotted at the start of the survey, they were then joined by two other dolphins and were thought to be foraging. Three of these dolphins then disappeared leaving ten dolphins foraging in the bay. During the second half of the survey 12 dolphins were spotted in the bay and they were all thought to be foraging. One Atlantic grey seal was also spotted at the very end of the survey near the harbour wall.
