22/09/2017: Bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were spotted in the first survey of the day starting at 7.00am. These were seen travelling from the fish factory on the west side from the harbour wall, towards the cardinal marker herding fish into shallower waters to feed. This group consisted of two adults and one calf travelling close together. This grouping was then seen travelling back towards the fish factory.

2 adult bottlenose dolphins and calf were seen by the fish factory west of the harbour wall and another grouping spotted by the black cardinal marker to the east of the harbour wall. The group to the west of the wall were seen travelling towards the cardinal marker towards the others, thought to be working together to herd fish into shallower waters.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny/overcast, sea state 1/2/3/4, wind direction SW

A total of 9 individual bottlenose dolphins were seen, thought to be the same individuals as past identified. A mother and calf to the west of the harbour wall, as well as individuals still by the cardinal marker. At 12.00pm a close swimming group of 6 and 2 calves were spotted in front of the harbour wall approximately 300m away and also to the right side of the harbour wall near stones, allowing for easy viewing for researchers to identify by fins and also for visitors to enjoy.

No sightings and very poor visibility over mist.
