22/09/13 – Bottlenose Dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seal

2 hour survey, start time: 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/dull, sea state 1, wind SW
4 Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf

The mother and calf Bottlenose dolphins were first seen in front of the harbour wall during the beginning of the survey. During the first hour of the survey period they stayed close to the surface and were observed either foraging or travelling; moving easterly around the harbour wall before turning South to come into the bay where they began foraging at depth. In the second hour of the survey they moved north-east to come out from the bay and travel over to the cardinal buoy. Meanwhile, throughout the two hour survey period there were 2 other adult Bottlenose dolphins close to or south east of the cardinal buoy. They were foraging at depth and keeping a distance of approximately 200m away from each other for most of the time. By the end of the survey, all dolphins were observed foraging at depth in the same area by the cardinal buoy.

2 hour survey, start time: 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/dull, sea state 1, wind SW-S-SE
3 Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf

At the beginning of the survey, the mother and calf Bottlenose dolphins were foraging at depth, just south of the cardinal buoy whilst an adult was observed just west of the cardinal buoy leaping and tail slapping. All of the dolphins then began foraging at depth for long periods. They stayed close to the cardinal buoy but moving around it. At the end of the survey all 3 dolphins joined together to forage in the same area.

2 hour survey, start time: 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/dull, sea state 1, wind SW
3 Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf and one Atlantic Grey seal

In the first hour of the survey 4 Bottlenose dolphins, including a calf were travelling west away from the cardinal buoy at the beginning of the survey. They travelled until they were in line with the harbour wall, before travelling back towards the cardinal buoy. They were then fast moving and were chasing prey at the surface. They travelled west one last time before they then travelled east one last time where they were no longer spotted at all in the second hour of the survey. One Atlantic Grey seal was observed in front of the harbour wall.

2 hour survey, start time: 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast/dull, sea state 2, wind SW-SE
1 Atlantic Grey seal

In the middle of this two hour survey an Atlantic Grey seal was spotted approximately 200m east of the fish factory. No other seals or dolphins were recorded during this survey.
