22/08/2013 – bottlenose dolphins

2 hour survey, start time: 9.00
Weather conditions: Fair/Sunny, sea state 1, wind direction SE/N/NE/NW
Five bottlenose dolphins

Dolphins were seen throughout the survey, beginning with two mingling, leaping and lunging by the cardinal buoy. A calf was then sighted playing with them, before two more dolphins came into sight, both foraging north east of the harbour wall. At 9.45 three groups had formed. The first group was an adult and calf foraging by the cardinal buoy, then two adults travelling west from the cardinal buoy, and then one single dolphin chasing prey at the surface. The number of dolphins dropped to three after this and they began leaping and lunging again, finishing the survey with two dolphins foraging by the cardinal buoy.

2 hour survey, start time: 11.00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1, wind direction N/NE
Four bottlenose dolphins

Again, dolphins were seen throughout the survey. To begin with three dolphins were spotted, one travelling south towards the harbour wall, and two seen foraging southwest of the cardinal buoy. This behaviour continued until 11.30 when three groups formed, with one foraging just off the harbour wall, another foraging east of the harbour wall and a final group of two leaping and lunging by the cardinal buoy. This behaviour remained constant until 12.30 when the number of dolphins dropped to two, both foraging east of the harbour wall. By the end of the survey the number had increased to four, with two foraging and two leaping and lunging east of the harbour wall.

2 hour survey, start time: 13.00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction W
Four bottlenose dolphins

Throughout the survey a group of two adults and one calf were sighted foraging, mingling, leaping and lunging by the cardinal buoy. At 14.00 one dolphin began travelling west away from the group but soon returned and joined them foraging.

2 hour survey, start time: 15.00
Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 0-1, wind direction W/SW/NW
Five bottlenose dolphins

The survey began with three bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, foraging by the cardinal buoy. This continued until 16.00 when two of the dolphins began staying, lying motionless at the surface. Another adult and calf were then seen travelling towards the cardinal buoy from the fish factory. The group of three then went to meet them half way and both groups began leaping and lunging together.
