2hr survey. Start time 07:00.
Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 1, wind direction S/SW/W.
Three bottlenose dolphins.
A mother and calf bottlenose dolphin identified as Jacky and her calf, were observed North-East of the harbour wall surfacing regularly and travelling in a south-easterly direction during the second half of the survey. They then continued to linger at the end of the harbour wall, milling around at the surface and taking long dives, thought to be foraging, before heading north away from the harbour past the headland. Another bottlenose dolphin then appeared at the end of the survey, close to the harbour wall, surfacing regularly and travelling east.
2hr survey. Start time 09:00.
Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction NW.
One bottlenose dolphin and one Atlantic grey seal.
The bottlenose dolphin observed during the last survey continued to linger in the area into the first half of this survey, milling around at the surface and taking long dives (thought to be foraging at depth) at the end of the harbour wall, towards the east. A female Atlantic grey seal was also sighted north of the harbour wall towards the start of the survey. The bottlenose dolphin then travelled west towards the headland whilst taking long dives, and surfacing at irregular intervals, before disappearing for the rest of the survey.
2hr survey. Start time 11:00.
Weather conditions: Fair/sunny, sea state 2-1, wind direction NW.
Four bottlenose dolphins.
Two bottlenose dolphins were sighted surfacing regularly and heading west at the start of the survey, followed by the mother and calf from the first survey (Jacky and calf) being spotted north-east of the harbour wall taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth. These two groups then joined, as the mother and calf were spotted with an individual from the other group. They then separated again, and the two bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling consistently towards the headland before disappearing. After not being seen for a while, Jacky and her calf were sighted again during the second half of the survey in the harbour fairly close to shore, staying in the same area whilst taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth. They also disappeared at the end of the survey.
2hr survey. Start time 13:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 2, wind direction W.
2 bottlenose dolphins.
Jacky and her calf were sighted again during this survey, milling around at the surface next to the cardinal marker. They spent the first half of the survey staying in this area, before moving closer to the harbour wall, lingering just north of it for most of the second half of the survey, before travelling west at the end of the survey, surfacing regularly and making determined progress.
2hr survey. Start time 15:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 2, wind direction SW.
2 bottlenose dolphins.
The mother and calf bottlenose dolphins continued to stay in the survey area from the last survey period into this one; no new bottlenose dolphins were sighted. They were observed milling around at the surface near the cardinal marker at the start of the survey, before moving towards the harbour wall, travelling west alongside it, then moving back out to the cardinal marker where they continued to mingle at the surface. They continued to move between the cardinal marker and north-west of the wall towards the headland for the duration of the survey, consistently displaying a milling behaviour as they regularly stayed at the surface.
