21/10/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins

2 hour survey, start time 09:00
Weather conditions: rain/overcast, sea state 1, wind ESE/SE/S/SW
14 bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey there was six bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, around the harbour seen to be leaping out of the water and foraging at depth. These were then joined by another mother and calf travelling into the harbour where all the dolphins stayed foraging at depth. For the last hour of the survey, the mother and calf stayed by the cardinal buoy foraging, briefly being joined by another dolphin.

2 hour survey, start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 1, wind SW/S
18 bottlenose dolphins

To begin the survey, four bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were seen by the cardinal buoy. Gradually more dolphins began to enter the harbour and after 30 minutes there were 18 dolphins, including three calves, spread across the harbour foraging at depth or travelling east towards the fish factory. As the survey continued, some dolphins began to disperse, leaving nine dolphins foraging at depth and leaping out of the water by the cardinal buoy and three dolphins travelling east across the harbour. At the end of the survey there was three dolphins foraging around the buoy and three dolphins travelling east by the harbour wall.

2 hour survey, start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/mist, sea state 2/3, wind SE
7 bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling west across the harbour towards the fish factory and another two were seen foraging at depth further out to sea behind the cardinal buoy. As the survey continued, seven dolphins were seen in the harbour, including two calves, all foraging at depth scattered across the harbour. In the last hour of the survey, five dolphins, including two calves, were seen leaping out of the water between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy and another dolphin was seen to be foraging at depth at the cardinal buoy. Towards the end of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins remained foraging around the cardinal buoy area.

2 hour survey, start time 15:00
Weather conditions: rain/overcast/fair, sea state 2, wind SW/S
One bottlenose dolphin

After 30 minutes of surveying, one bottlenose dolphin was seen travelling east by the fish factory, thought to be looking for food whilst on the move. After an hour of surveying, the bottlenose dolphin was seen again foraging at depth east of the fish factory. There were no further sightings for the last 45 minutes of the survey.
