2/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Nothing was seen until the last 25 seconds of survey, when 1 bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging near the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 3, wind direction W/SW

1 bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging by the cardinal buoy for the first half hour. A female Atlantic grey seal was then seen swimming west, parallel to the harbour wall, and then displayed a mixture of swimming and bottling behaviour by the wall and New Quay head for the final hour.

The female seal from the previous survey stayed in front of the wall for the first half hour. In the second half of the survey, one male seal was briefly seen in the water in front of the wall.

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 3/4, wind direction NW/W

6 bottlenose dolphins were seen in 2 groups, as well as 1 Atlantic grey seal. 2 dolphins were seen foraging to the left of the cardinal buoy, and one other dolphins to the left of the group was travelling west whilst foraging. A group of 4 (including one calf) was then seen foraging in front of the wall, and were briefly joined by one seal swimming northwards. In the second half of the survey, one dolphin was briefly seen lunging and leaping just beyond the cardinal buoy. Later, a group of 5 dolphins (including one calf) travelled southwest, whilst foraging, from the right of the cardinal buoy.
