Seven bottlenoses dolphins
Fifteen minutes into the survey period a pair of bottlenose dolphins were spotted by the cardinal marker foraging at depth before being joined by another bottlenose dolphin. This group was then observed, along with an individual bottlenose dolphin further offshore, travelling west with regular surfacing towards the headland. Towards the end of the first hour of the survey period this group of four, including 1 calf, was at first seen milling at the surface between the harbour wall and the headland, then displaying splashy behaviour at the surface including leaping, breaching, spy-hopping. A further group of 3 bottlenose dolphins was observed milling at the surface by the cardinal marker. At the beginning of the second half or the survey the two groups came together in offshore in front of the headland. The group of four bottlenose dolphins, one a calf, was observed tail-slapping, leaping, breaching, spy-hopping, jumping on top of one another and displaying close contact behaviour. The group of three was also observed displaying energetic behaviours including leaping. The two groups the joined together and this group of seven bottlenose dolphins remained very active displaying similar activity as beforehand before disappearing around the headland halfway into the second half of the survey period.
