20/09/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 1-2, wind direction S

Three bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling North West around the headland in the first fifteen minutes, before disappearing for half an hour. Four dolphins including a calf were then seen travelling back into the bay from around the headland; one went on to forage near the cardinal marker with the three including the calf foraging near the harbour wall. A mother and calf pairing were then seen travelling into the bay from around the headland, where they were joined by another adult to forage near the harbour wall. Three adults and two calves joined up to form one group near the harbour wall, with two adults and a calf milling around and leaping near the headland. This survey ended with two mother and calf pairings within the bay.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/fair, sea state 1-2, wind direction S/SW/SE

Dolphins were seen for nearly the entirety of this survey, with only fifteen minutes where they were absent. A mother and calf pairing were seen foraging near the wall, two adults foraging offshore and two foraging near the cardinal marker. These remained for half an hour, when the mother and calf left and the dolphins foraging at the cardinal marker became four. In the second hour dolphin presence decreased, with two dolphins near the cardinal marker. One was spotted leaping offshore and then the two near the cardinal marker moved towards the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 1-3, wind direction S/SE

Four dolphins were seen foraging near the headland, with three dolphins including a calf foraging in front of the harbour wall. The dolphins in front of the harbour wall then became two mother and calf pairings, with three dolphins foraging further offshore. Six dolphins including two calves were foraging near the harbour wall, with three adult dolphins offshore leaping and head slapping. The six in front of the harbour wall then moved out towards the cardinal marker, where they were observed milling at the surface of the water. The six dolphins then moved around the headland at the start of the second hour, where sightings were quiet until the last fifteen minutes, when a female Atlantic grey seal was seen logging in front of the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction S

Sightings were quiet until the last half an hour when two Atlantic grey seals were seen bottling near the wall, one male and one female.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 1, wind direction S/SE

Sightings were quiet on this survey as well, with one bottlenose dolphin being spotted travelling east offshore, then one Atlantic grey seal in the water near the harbour wall.
