19/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 2, wind direction S/SE

Five bottlenose dolphins were present in the bay for the majority of this survey, between 9:30 and 10:15 there was a group of four dolphins including two juveniles foraging and leaping near the cardinal marker and also one lone dolphins foraging very close to the harbour wall. By 10:15 the group and lone dolphin moved away until only one lone dolphin adult dolphin remained foraging near the cardinal buoy.

Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 2, wind direction S/SE

For the entirety of this survey there were two-five bottlenose dolphins in the survey area, including two juvenile individuals, the dolphins were observed foraging in areas close to the cardinal marker as well as more offshore areas north of the cardinal marker and closer to the fish factory in the West of the bay. At the end of this survey three dolphins including one juvenile were still foraging close to the cardinal buoy and one dolphin was spotted foraging two hundred metres due north of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: Overcast/Rain, sea state 1-2, wind direction E/SE/S

Three dolphins from the previous survey remained in the survey area for the first hour of this two-hour survey foraging close to and east of the cardinal marker. After 14:00 the remaining two bottlenose dolphins travelled west from the cardinal marker toward the fish factory which they remained close to for the rest of the survey, foraging in the area just off the headland.

Weather conditions: Overcast/Rain, sea state 2-3, wind direction SE

No dolphins were spotted during this survey, however two Atlantic Grey seals were observed from the harbour wall. The first was a female spotted scanning just off the harbour wall for the first half-hour of the survey. The second female grey seal was spotted during the last fifteen minutes of this survey, swimming toward the harbour wall from the fish factory area.
