19/10/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2 hour survey, start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 2, wind SE-S
Nine bottlenose dolphins, including two calves and one Atlantic grey seal

For the first half hour of the survey seven bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were. An adult and calf were milling close to the harbour wall, two adults and a calf were foraging close to the cardinal buoy and two adults were foraging further out from the harbour wall. In the second half hour five bottlenose dolphins were initially seen with the adult and calf foraging close to the harbour wall at first before joining the two adults and one calf that were foraging close to the cardinal buoy. An Atlantic grey seal was also seen briefly close to the harbour wall. Early in the second hour of the survey, three bottlenose dolphins (two adults and one calf) were seen milling close to the harbour, and were soon joined by another three adults. Their behaviour involved slow and fast milling at the surface, foraging, and leaping. In the last half hour eight bottlenose dolphins, including one calf were seen close to the harbour wall before two adults moved over to the cardinal buoy.

Weather conditions: overcast with rain/fair, sea state 1-2, wind SE-S
13 bottlenose dolphins, including three calves and one Atlantic grey seal

The survey began with five bottlenose dolphins, including one calf were spread out between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy. They were milling, leaping and foraging. During the first hour of the survey up to 13 bottlenose dolphins, including three calves were seen milling and foraging. In the second hour, six to ten dolphins, including up to three calves were observed around the cardinal buoy seemingly socialising with leaps and fast circling. During this time, however, a group of six bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were seen heading in an easterly direction between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy and were surfacing regularly. Following them were another three adults.

A female Atlantic grey seal was also seen close to the harbour wall. There were no sightings until the last half hour of the survey when five bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were seen foraging close to the fish factory. One of the dolphins then headed towards the cardinal buoy where it was seen foraging.
