19/09/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and an Atlantic grey seal

2 hour survey, start time: 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast-rain, sea state 1, wind SE
Seven bottlenose dolphins including two calves, one Atlantic grey seal

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the entire survey. Seven dolphins were sighted at the very beginning of the survey including two mothers and their calves foraging close to the harbour wall. For the remainder of the first hour, a mother and calf continued to forage at the harbour wall whilst another adult was sighted travelling around the harbour to then forage at the cardinal buoy. For the second hour of the survey the second mother and calf were sighted once more along with a couple more lone dolphins foraging in the distance passed the fish factory. An Atlantic grey seal was sighted in the last 15 minutes very close to the small, shell beach.

2 hour survey, start time: 11:00
Weather conditions: rain-overcast-sunny, sea state 1-2, wind S-SE
Seven bottlenose dolphins including one calf

Bottlenose dolphins were only sighted in the first hour of the survey. At the beginning of the survey a dolphin was sighted travelling south-west towards the harbour wall, a mother and calf were sighted travelling east towards the edge of the reef and another lone dolphin was sighted travelling east towards the cardinal buoy. Many of these dolphins then started to exhibit logging behaviour (lying motionless at the surface). Half an hour into the survey another dolphin was sighted making rapid progress through the water with forward leaps towards and past the cardinal buoy. The last sighting of the survey was after half an hour when two bottlenose dolphins were sighted travelling east towards the cardinal buoy.

2 hour survey, start time: 13:00
Weather conditions: fair-sunny, sea state 2-3, wind SW

2 hour survey, start time: 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2-3, wind SW
Four bottlenose dolphins including one calf

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted in the second half of the survey only. Two adults and one calf were sighted travelling west towards the harbour wall an hour into the survey. These individuals were not sighted again however in the last half an hour a single bottlenose dolphin was observed traveling east in the distance from behind the fish factory before doing a lap of the harbour, never stopping for long in one specific location, before heading back towards the fish factory again.
