19/08/2013 – Bottlenose Dolphins, Atlantic grey seal

2 hour survey, start time 9.00
Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 2-4, wind direction W
Seven bottlenose dolphins

During the first half of the survey four dolphins remained within the bay; one very close to the harbour wall and the others surrounding the Cardinal Buoy. The dolphins were diving, leaping and thought to be foraging. During the second half of the survey dolphins remained around the Cardinal Buoy and the end of the harbour wall, also now joined by a mother and calf. An Atlantic grey seal also popped its head up out of the water just next to the harbour wall.

Five bottlenose dolphins

Throughout the majority of the survey three dolphins remained within the survey area leaping, diving and thought to be foraging slightly offshore from the harbour wall and near to the Cardinal Buoy. Towards the end of two hours these dolphins left the survey area. Two other dolphins were seen foraging at the end of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 2, wind direction W/NW/WSW
Three bottlenose dolphins

Three dolphins were seen throughout the first hour of the survey diving and thought to be foraging between the fish factory and the Cardinal Buoy. There were no further sightings for the rest of the survey period.

Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2-3, wind direction W/SW
Two bottlenose dolphins

By the last survey of the day two dolphins returned to the bay and came very close to the harbour wall whilst travelling around the area; thought to be searching for prey. The dolphins remained in the same area until the end of the survey.
