Five bottlenose dolphins

The survey started off quietly, but in the last half hour two groups of bottlenose dolphins moved into the harbour. Two animals were first sighted close to the end of the pier travelling east. These animals moved right into the harbour towards the lifeboat pier. Another group was seen at about the same time at the fish factory with one juvenile and two adults. They started off deep diving possibly hunting at the headland. The group later changed behaviours to energetic leaping and lunging.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction W
Six bottlenose dolphins

The five dolphins from the previous survey remained in the harbour into the 3pm watch. The three animals at the fish factory moved to the end of the harbour wall while the group of two were seen diving in amongst the moored boats. The groups then split and only one individual from each group remained- one was travelling North West back towards the fish factory and the other moved to the cardinal marker where it continued to dive. After this another individual was seen at the fish factory milling for a little while before heading back out of view. Some of the animals from that were seen earlier on then re-joined the remaining individuals so that by the time the survey ended there were five dolphins milling north of the wall.
