19/06/2016: 29 Bottlenose Dolphins & 1 Atlantic Grey Seal

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state: 1, wind direction: S/SE
7 bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted in the bay for almost the entire survey period. Three dolphins (including a calf) were observed travelling around the harbour area near the fish factory, before taking long dives beneath the surface, thought to indicate that they were foraging at depth. Shortly after, another two bottlenose dolphins (one of which a calf) were seen travelling into the harbour and were also thought to be foraging at depth. At the beginning of the second survey hour, two more bottlenose dolphins were observed in the bay near the harbour wall and were seen displaying a range of behaviours including milling around the surface and foraging.

2hr survey. Start time 9:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state: 1, wind direction: S/SW
10 bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins (including a few calves) were present in the bay for the entire duration of this survey and were displaying a range of behaviours. Many were seen taking long dives beneath the surface near the fish factory headland, thought to indicate that they were foraging at depth. There were also a few dolphins near to the cardinal marker that were observed milling around at the surface, leaping and tail-slapping.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state: 0/1, wind direction: S/SE
5 bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted in the bay for almost the entire survey period. Towards the beginning of the survey, three dolphins were seen travelling east into the harbour area and another two bottlenose dolphins also appeared to be splashing, leaping and milling around at the surface near the headland at this time. Half-way through the survey period, a mother and calf bottlenose dolphin were observed taking long dives beneath the surface, thought to indicate that they were foraging at depth.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: rain, sea state: 1/2, wind direction: S/SE
4 bottlenose dolphins

A group of four bottlenose dolphins (including one juvenile) were seen in the harbour for the entire duration of this survey period. The first hour allowed observations of travelling behaviour around the bay, whilst the second hour involved some long dives beneath the surface (thought to be foraging at depth). Towards the end of the survey, three of the dolphins (including the calf) were observed splashing, leaping and milling around at the water surface.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: rain, sea state: 1, wind direction: SE
3 bottlenose dolphins & 1 Atlantic grey seal

During the first hour of the survey, three bottlenose dolphins (including a juvenile) were observed near the headland taking long dives beneath the surface, thought to indicate that they were foraging at depth. Towards the end of the survey, one Atlantic grey seal was sighted in the water near to the harbour wall.
