19/04/14: 43 bottlenose dolphins and 4 Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 10:00

15 bottlenose dolphins

There was an immediate sighting of three adult bottlenose dolphins in front of the harbour wall; foraging leaping and socialising. Another group of three adult bottlenose dolphins were also seen slightly north west of the first sighting displaying similar behaviours 400m from the boat offshore. Fifteen minutes later a group of four dolphins including two juveniles, one calf with foetal folds and an adult were spotted 500m west of Birds Rock foraging with visible fish, travelling slowly and leaping. Towards the end of the survey two dolphins were spotted, an adult and calf 300m from the boat displaying foraging behaviours. A further and final three dolphins were spotted including two juveniles 10m in front of the boat showing foraging behaviours.

11 Bottlenose dolphins

 

Three bottlenose dolphins, two adults and one calf were spotted near birds rock, there was close contact with the calf, the dolphins were displaying socialising behaviours. A further 5 dolphins including two calves and three adults travelling East socialising and then joined another group of animals. Further down the coast before Cymtydu, a final three dolphins were spotted foraging 400m offshore from the boat.

One Atlantic grey seal

One male Atlantic grey seal was spotted in the water one hour into the survey near Ynys Lochtyn.

 

4hr Survey. Start time 13.35

Weather conditions: sea state 2-3, visibility >10km, light swell.

12 bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal.

One and a half hours into the survey there was a brief encounter with three slow travelling large bottlenose dolphins, two of which were well notched. On the inshore leg of the journey one female Atlantic grey seal was spotted eating a large fish. When the boat was approaching Cymtydu a loose group nine bottlenose dolphins were encountered travelling NW, this group included two calves with still visible foetal folds, and seven adults. The adults bow rode for several minutes and were socialising.

Weather conditions: sea sate 1-2, visibility >10km, light swell.

5 bottlenose dolphins and two grey seals.

Five bottlenose dolphins were spotted between the fish factory and bird rock, the group included one juvenile and a calf, the dolphins wake and bow rode and leaped. A lone male seal was spotted in the water, and alter on a lone female was spotted hauled out on a rock.
