18/09/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction N

A total of 7 bottlenose dolphins in 3 groups, and 1 Atlantic grey seal were seen. The survey started with five bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, spread out foraging between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy. In the second half of the survey, 2 more dolphins (including a calf) pair joined the others, and the original mother and calf pair travelled west out of the survey area. In the last half hour, only one bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging near the cardinal buoy, and an Atlantic grey seal was seen travelling to the west past the harbour wall during the penultimate interval.

A mother and calf were seen close to the cardinal buoy for the whole of the survey. They were milling at the surface to begin with, then foraged for the majority of the time before showing fast circling and lunging behaviour in the last 15 minutes.

Just 1 Atlantic grey seal was seen swimming and diving just off New Quay head for one 15-minute interval.
