18/07/2017: Bottlenose dolphins

Weather conditions: fair/sunny sea state 2-3, wind direction NE

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the first survey of the day. Groups were seen foraging throughout the bay with some individuals seen leaping out of the water and head slapping. A number of oystercatchers and gannets were also spotted.

Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2-3, wind direction NE/E

The same group of bottlenose dolphins seen in the previous survey continued to forage throughout the bay.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 3, wind direction SE

A mother and calf were seen foraging close to the harbour wall at the start of the survey, but were not spotted again. Nothing else was seen until the end of the survey, when a lone bottlenose dolphin was seen close to the fish factory.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 2, wind direction SE

No sightings. A barrel jellyfish was spotted by the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction NE/E/SE/S

No sightings until the end of the survey when one lone bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging and two were seen travelling away from the cardinal marker. Gannets, terns and compass jellyfish were also seen.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 2-3, wind direction SE

The same three bottlenose dolphins seen in the last survey were seen. One stayed foraging by the cardinal marker throughout the survey, while the other two were only seen in the first half of the survey. Gannets, terns and Manx shearwater were also spotted.
