18/06/2016: Bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

2h survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 3-4, wind direction NW
Eight bottlenose dolphins

Early in the survey period, four bottlenose dolphins were seen near New Quay pier, thought to be foraging. Some disappeared or were seen near the Llanina reef, while one bottlenose dolphin stayed close to the harbour wall. Later in the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were seen between harbour wall and pier, with a mother and calf seen during the last half hour, thought to be foraging.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast/sunny, sea state 2-3, wind direction N-NE
Five bottlenose dolphins

The mother and calf from the previous survey stayed close to New Quay pier for about half an hour, still thought to be foraging, before disappearing. Towards the end of the survey period, a mother and calf were again seen by New Quay harbour wall, travelling in a north-westerly direction. Three bottlenose dolphins, also including a mother and calf, were observed foraging by the cardinal marker until the end of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction N-NW
Eight bottlenose dolphins

In the first hour of this survey, a mother and calf pairing was observed between harbour wall and cardinal marker, thought to be foraging. In the second half of the survey, up to six bottlenose dolphins, including a mother and calf, were observed leaping, tail slapping, and displaying splashy behaviour between headland and cardinal marker.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction NW
Seven bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Throughout this survey, bottlenose dolphins were again seen. At the beginning of this survey, five bottlenose dolphins were observed by the cardinal marker. A group of four was seen leaping and splashing, while a single bottlenose dolphin was thought to be foraging. Later, the group was seen to split up, with bottlenose dolphins seen travelling and taking long dives between headland and cardinal marker. Two mother and calf pairings were seen and towards the end of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were spotted very close to the harbour wall. One Atlantic grey seal was also spotted halfway through the survey period in the water off the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction W-NW
Seven bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of this survey, two bottlenose dolphins were still observed foraging and travelling close to the harbour wall. They gradually disappeared and one dolphin was seen between headland and cardinal marker for the next half hour. About halfway through the survey period, one bottlenose dolphin was again seen slowly travelling past the harbour wall towards the headland, where up to seven bottlenose dolphins, including a mother and calf, were later seen foraging and displaying splashy behaviour, such as leaping.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 1-2, wind direction W-NW
Three bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of this survey period, one bottlenose dolphin was seen by the headland, travelling off in a westerly direction, thought to be searching for prey on the move. The last sighting of dolphins was made about half an hour later, with two bottlenose dolphins seen taking long dives near the cardinal marker, thought to be foraging at depth.
