18/06/2015: 11 bottlenose dolphins, 3 Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey: Start time 07:00.

Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 2/3, wind direction SW.

5 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic grey seal.

During our morning survey five individual bottlenose dolphins were spotted entering the harbour from the fish factory direction. At 7:45 an adult bottlenose was sighted just off the harbour wall milling at the surface for about half an hour before travelling north and out of sight. As this dolphin left the survey area a mother and juvenile swam into the harbour. The mother and juvenile travelled to the Pen Polion, the small harbour wall, and displayed foraging behaviours, surfacing regularly for the rest of the survey period. Fifteen minutes later, an Atlantic grey seal was also seen bottling close by the mother and juvenile. Another individual bottlenose dolphin was seen milling at the surface in the middle of the survey further out to sea.

2hr survey: Start time 09:00.

5 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic grey seal.

The mother and juvenile continued to forage by Pen Polion during the 9am survey and were joined briefly by another adult individual bottlenose dolphin in the middle of the survey. An Atlantic grey seal was again spotted nearby the mother and juvenile before it dived and disappeared. Halfway through the survey a mother and calf were also seen just north of the harbour wall foraging and milling at the surface before swimming back out to sea.

Again, the mother and juvenile foraged by the surface inside the harbour until 12:15 when they rounded the harbour wall and headed out to sea. As they left the harbour an adult bottlenose dolphin appeared at the end of the harbour wall and stayed for approximately fifteen minutes before swimming back out towards the fish factory and out of site. Halfway through the survey two individual bottlenose dolphins were identified out near the cardinal buoy foraging at depth and slowly traveling westwards toward the fish factory before disappearing.
