Six Bottlenose Dolphins.

At the very end of this two hour survey three groups of bottlenose dolphins came into the harbour, one of the groups containing a new born. The group with the new born dolphin and two adults came within a couple of hundred metres of the harbour wall where they were diving and irregularly surfacing. The other two groups were displaying the same behaviour but further away from the wall.

Six Bottlenose Dolphins

Five of the bottlenose dolphins from the previous survey remained in the harbour through this survey too- the group of three and a group of two. The animals started off regularly surfacing, with the new born’s group staying close to the harbour wall for some time, before changing to diving behaviour. The group then split with one individual heading towards the reef. Later in the survey this animal was seen chasing prey at the surface towards the cardinal marker while the other groups in the bay continued to dive. Throughout the rest of the survey the mother and calf group and the individual moved around the harbour particularly around the cardinal buoy, and the other group of two travelled out of the harbour. At the end of the survey a new individual came in between the harbour wall and the fish factory leaping and splashing about.

Three Bottlenose Dolphins

The leaping individual and the mother and calf group both remained in the harbour through this survey. To begin with, the larger group was seen diving near the cardinal marker and the individual was very close into the harbour wall, but the two groups joined together early in the survey and travelled further away from the wall. One adult was seen leaping before the group split up again and one adult was seen chasing prey at the surface of the water, whilst the mother and calf foraged. The mother and calf remained foraging offshore whilst the individual dolphin was seen close to the harbour wall travelling east. The group re-joined further out from the harbour wall for the last 15 minutes of this survey and travelled west towards the fish factory.

Three bottlenose dolphins

The group of three dolphins from the last survey remained offshore foraging, and they were also joined by one individual beside the cardinal buoy. These dolphins remained for half an hour before the group of three disappeared and the individual dolphin travelled north out of the survey area. There were no more dolphins seen for the remainder of this survey.
