17/05/14: Bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic grey seals

Four bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey two Bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging near the fish factory where they remained for around an hour. 30 minutes into the survey a mother and calf appeared and traveled into the harbour where they remained for a time before moving North and then East towards the cardinal buoy.

Two bottlenose dolphins

A mother and calf were spotted in the harbour at the beginning of the survey where they remained for the length of the survey. Both mother and calf were thought to be milling around at the surface during this time.

Two bottlenose dolphins, One Atlantic grey seal

The mother and calf remained near the harbour wall for the first hour of the survey before moving off towards the cardinal buoy around 1hour into the survey. Early in the survey a male Atlantic grey seal was briefly spotted near to the harbour wall.

Three bottlenose dolphins

The mother and calf remained near to the cardinal buoy for the entire length of the survey where they were thought to be foraging. In the last 30 minutes of survey another Bottlenose dolphin appeared from the West whereupon it traveled towards the harbour wall before moving North.

Sixteen bottlenose dolphins

The mother and calf remained near the cardinal buoy for around 45 minutes before moving away. Three dolphins were spotted foraging near the fish factory for the first 30 minutes of the survey before moving East. A large group of six dolphins including one calf were spotted 500m NE of the harbour wall where they were seen circling quickly near the surface, tail slapping and leaping before they moved off towards the fish factory.

Fifteen bottlenose dolphins

Four Bottlenose dolphins were spotted travelling East from near the factory at the beginning of the survey. Two dolphins remained 500m directly North of the wall, one remained travelling East and the other traveled to the harbour where it stayed for around 30 minutes. A mother and calf appeared briefly in front of the wall travelling West 30 minutes into the survey. Soon after five dolphins including two calves appeared from near the fish factory travelling East before turning and making rapid progress back towards the fish factory. A large group of seven dolphins remained socialising – mingling and leaping near to the fish factory at the end of the survey.
