16/08/2017: Bottlenose Dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seals

 

 

2hr survey, start time 07:00

Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction S/SE

 

Dolphins were seen throughout the survey starting at 07:00. One lone dolphin was seen foraging and another travelling easterly which was thought to have been searching for pray whilst on the move. Later on the individuals form a group and a juvenile also appeared next to the cardinal marker. A seal was also spotted swimming and diving.

 

 

2hr survey, start time 09:00

Weather conditions: fair/sunny/overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction S/SE

 

A group of five bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling east from the fish factory. Later on the dolphins were foraging at some depth and also began to mingle at the surface with leaps, lunges and tail slaps seen. Half way through the survey the dolphins left the area and there were no later sightings.

 

2hr survey, start time 11:00

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 1, wind direction S/SW

 

The first sighting was of an Atlantic grey seal near the fish factory. Later on in the survey two bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging just off of the headland.

 

2hr survey, start time 13:00

Weather conditions: fair/sunny/overcast, sea state 2-3, wind direction SSE/SE

 

One lone bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging near the harbour wall. Later on an individual was seen head-slapping, foraging and approaching/following a boat.

 

2hr survey, start time 15:00

Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 2-3, wind direction S/SW

 

A very quiet survey, with only one Atlantic Grey Seal seen bottling off of the harbour wall.
