16/08/12 Bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

2hr survey: Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/sunny; sea state 1/3; wind direction W/E/SE
Two bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal.

At the beginning of the survey one bottlenose dolphin was observed leaping and foraging around the fish factory. This individual was also observed to be chasing prey, as mackerel were seen at the surface. 15 minutes later, the same individual was observed in the same area and was in very close proximity of an Atlantic grey seal. Later in the survey two bottlenose dolphins were observed foraging around the fish factory, one of which was a calf. These two bottlenose dolphins remained in the area between the fish factory and the harbour wall for the remainder of the survey displaying behaviours such as foraging and chasing prey. During the last half an hour of the survey one bottlenose dolphin had a boat encounter within fifty meters and was seen to be fast circling, leaping, tail slapping and jumping, however this behaviour was not influenced by the boat.
2hr survey: Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/sunny/ Overcast/ Dull/ rain/ Sun & Showers; sea state 1/2; wind direction: S
Six bottlenose dolphins, one calf.

When the survey began three bottlenose dolphins, one of which was a calf, were seen having a boat encounter in the area between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy. They were exhibiting foraging behaviour which was unchanged by the boat encounter. Fifteen minutes later they were joined by a further three bottlenose dolphins in the same area which were traveling in a Northerly direction. In the 11:30 time slot of the survey, one bottlenose dolphin was foraging off the harbour wall and was encountered by a boat, however it made no difference to the behaviour. Throughout the remainder of the survey, two dolphins were seen foraging off the fish factory area. Towards the end of the survey they were involved in a boat encounter, which did not change the behaviour.
2hr survey: Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/sunny; sea state 3/2; wind direction: S
Six bottlenose dolphins.

At the beginning of the survey one bottlenose dolphin was observed foraging in the area around the fish factory, during which time it was involved in a boat encounter. The behaviour remained unchanged. Later in the survey two bottlenose dolphins were observed in the area around the fish factory foraging and remained in the area for around half an hour. Later one bottlenose dolphin was seen at the same location exhibiting behavioural patterns of foraging. This lone dolphin was involved in a boat encounter but the behaviour remained unchanged.

2hr survey: Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast/sunny; sea state 3; wind direction: N/NW
Four bottlenose dolphins.
During the survey two bottlenose dolphins were observed chasing prey with fish seen in the area between the fish factory and the harbour wall, this was also a boat encounter of less than fifty meters which left the behaviour unchanged. This behaviour was observed for some time in the same area, up to around fifteen minutes, when they were joined by a third bottlenose dolphin which appeared to be foraging. Towards the end of the survey, up to three bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging off the headland at the fish factory.
