16/06/2016: Thirteen bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

2h survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 2, wind direction NW
Ten bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

All throughout this survey, bottlenose dolphins were seen. At the beginning of the survey period, three bottlenose dolphins were observed by the cardinal marker, thought to be foraging at depth. A further two dolphins were spotted in the bay by the harbour, also thought to be foraging, and then travelling along the shore. Midway through the survey period, six bottlenose dolphins were seen by the cardinal marker, being very active, leaping and tail slapping. They were joined by a group of four bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, still leaping and splashing. The group dispersed after a while, with bottlenose dolphins seen between headland and cardinal marker, travelling and foraging. A female Atlantic grey seal was also spotted in the water off the harbour wall in the last 15 minutes of this survey.

The female Atlantic grey seal also remained in the area for the first minutes. The bottlenose dolphins were shortly joined by another dolphin, before disappearing from view. Towards the end of the survey period, one bottlenose dolphin was seen by the cardinal marker, thought to be foraging at depth. It was joined by a second bottlenose dolphin and the pair was seen travelling just north of the harbour wall before returning to the cardinal marker.
