16/06/2015: 25 bottlenose dolphins

16/06/2015: 25 bottlenose dolphins.

2hr survey. Start time 07:00.
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 1, wind direction S-SW.
Seven bottlenose dolphins.

In the first half of the survey period one bottlenose dolphin was sighted off the harbour wall milling around at the surface. Four more were then sighted off the fish factory, displaying behaviours such as fast circling at the surface, leaps, tail slaps and lunges. In the second half of the survey the group of four dolphins travelled over to the cardinal marker, milling around at the surface and taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth. Two more dolphins also joined the one sighted by the harbour wall, with the group then taking long dives. In the final quarter of the survey the dolphins began to leave the area, continuously milling about the surface and taking long dives, with only four seen towards the end of the survey, before finally disappearing.

2hr survey: Start time 09:00.
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 1, wind direction S-SW.
Four bottlenose dolphins.

In the first half of the survey period what is believed to be two new dolphins entered the survey area, taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth. They moved towards the cardinal marker, mingling at the surface for the rest of survey. In the second half of the survey another two dolphins joined the original two near the cardinal marker, with one displaying tail slaps. In the final quarter of the survey, one of the later dolphins joined up with the original two, with the group displaying behaviours such as leaps and lunges, with one animal logging in the middle of the group. There was also some bird association, with gannets circling the dolphins. At the end of the survey three dolphins were seen near the cardinal marker, mingling at the surface.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00.
Weather conditions: Fair/sunny, sea state 1, wind direction W-SW.
Six bottlenose dolphins.

In the first half of the survey period what is believed to be the same four bottlenose dolphins as the previous survey were sighted around the cardinal marker, mingling at the surface and staying around for the first half hour before disappearing. In the second half of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins travelled from the fish factory, taking long dives and surfacing at irregular intervals, thought to be searching for prey whilst on the move. The two dolphins travelled over to the cardinal marker in the last quarter of the survey period, mingling at the surface.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00.
Weather conditions: Fair/sunny, sea state 2, wind direction NW.
Seven bottlenose dolphins.

In the first half of the survey period, three bottlenose dolphins, two thought to be same dolphins from the previous survey, were sighted taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth near the cardinal marker, before being joined by a fourth dolphin. The group then disappeared. In the second half of the survey, what is thought to be three new bottlenose dolphins were sighted near the cardinal marker, taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 2, wind direction NW.
Seven bottlenose dolphins.

In the first half of the survey period the same three bottlenose dolphins as those seen in the previous survey were sighted around the cardinal marker, mingling at the surface, before a fourth joined and the behaviour changing to long dives, with the dolphins thought to be foraging at depth. Three more then joined, creating a group of seven (thought to be the same seven as the previous survey), displaying behaviour such as fast circling at the surface, leaps, tail slaps and lunges. In the second half of the survey period, the dolphins had split up into different groups, with only four sighted in two different groups mingling at the surface. The dolphins then began to disperse, with two seen travelling west towards the fish factory, before displaying fast circling at the surface, leaps, tail slaps and lunges near the fish factory. At the end of the survey period only one bottlenose dolphin was sighted off the fish factory milling about at the surface.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00.
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 2, wind direction NW.
Seven bottlenose dolphins.

In the first quarter of the survey period, four bottlenose dolphins were sighted bow riding a sail boat into the harbour, before moving out past the cardinal buoy and being joined by at least one other, mingling at the surface and finally disappearing for the rest of the survey. Two dolphins, identified as Connie and her juvenile, were sighted at the end of Pen Polion, the small harbour wall, at the very end of the last survey of the day. They were seen mingling at the surface, and still sighted there past the end of the survey period at 19:00.
