15/6/13: Bottlenose Dolphins & Atlantic Grey Seals

Five bottlenose dolphins

In the first three quarters of the survey the dolphin numbers varied from three down to one. They were deep diving, thought to be foraging for food or travelling in a consistent direction around the bay. The focus for the activity was just north of the harbour wall. There was a mother and calf present through some of the survey. There were no dolphins present in the last 30 minutes of the survey

Nine bottlenose dolphins

A single dolphin first sighted in the survey was then joined by another and they were slow circling near the surface just off the harbour wall. In the second half the survey the numbers increased to six dolphins in a fairly loose group spread about the harbour with a mother and calf coming close to the harbour wall. This further increased to nine dolphins with a group of six dolphins, two of them being calves, heading towards the fish factory. In the last quarter of the survey there were four increasing to five dolphins heading out to the cardinal buoy starting to take longer dives thought to be foraging for food.

One bottlenose dolphin

A single dolphin was spotted by the cardinal buoy taking long dives and surfacing irregularly.

One Atlantic grey seal

A lone female Atlantic grey seal was sighted close to the harbour wall. There was significant gannet activity.
