15/10/12: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Six Bottlenose dolphins

During the first half of the survey four Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were seen staying near the cardinal buoy. They were seen leaping, milling around and were also thought to be foraging at depth. During the second half of the survey the group stayed near the cardinal buoy displaying the same behaviour with one dolphin splitting off from the group. At the very end of the survey three dolphins were seen travelling towards the fish factory with one staying near the cardinal buoy.

11 Bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey four Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were seen leaping and tail slapping near the fish factory. Shortly after a group of five Bottlenose dolphins were spotted north of the harbour wall. Then all of the dolphins disappeared and one Atlantic grey seal was spotted near the harbour wall. At the start of the second half of the survey four Bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were spotted in the bay. They were thought to be travelling at depth. Then one of the dolphins disappeared leaving a mother and a calf milling at the surface within the harbour wall  and one dolphin foraging near the cardinal buoy. No dolphins were spotted for the last 15 minutes of the survey.

Seven Bottlenose dolphins
At the start of the survey four Bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were seen travelling towards the fish factory. They were then joined by one other dolphin and were still seen travelling. The dolphins then split up with one dolphin foraging at depth near the harbour wall, two foraging at depth out past the cardinal buoy and a mother and a calf foraging at the reef. These dolphins then disappeared and there were no sightings for 15 minutes until the very end of the survey when seven Bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were seen north of the harbour wall.

Eight bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

At the start of the survey seven Bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were seen north of the harbour wall. They were seen travelling, milling at the surface and leaping. They then split into one group of four and two groups of two before disappearing. At the start of the second half of the survey one female Atlantic grey seal was seen near the harbour wall. There were no sightings until the end of the survey when six Bottlenose dolphins were spotted north of the harbour wall, they were thought to be foraging at depth.
