15/08/2015: 14 bottlenose dolphins and 2 Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 2-3, wind direction NW
Two Atlantic grey seals and one bottlenose dolphin

Half an hour into the survey period, an Atlantic grey seal was spotted just in front of the harbour wall, briefly exposing its head out of the water, before disappearing again. Shortly afterwards, a single bottlenose dolphin surfaced briefly at the end of the harbour wall, before disappearing for the remainder of the survey period. During the last 45 minutes, another Atlantic grey seal, a male, was sighted bottling and surfacing repeatedly in front of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: overcast/ sunny, sea state 3-4, wind direction W/NW
One Atlantic grey seal and two bottlenose dolphins

The same Atlantic grey seal was seen briefly at the beginning of this survey period, but disappeared for the remainder of the day. At the end of the survey period, two bottlenose dolphins was sighted at the cardinal marker, briefly travelling north with irregular surfacing, thought to be foraging whilst on the move. At the end of the period they were observed taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth.

Four bottlenose dolphins

The two bottlenose dolphins observed at the end of the last survey period foraged around the cardinal marker for the first 45 minutes. Half way through the survey period, two more bottlenose dolphins appeared in the survey area, joining the previous two individuals in front of the harbour wall to socialise at the water surface. By the end of the survey period, only one bottlenose dolphin of the group was observed, milling about at the surface near the cardinal marker.

Five bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey period, two bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling south towards the harbour wall, with irregular surfacing, before stopping to take long dives. In the second half of the survey period, the two bottlenose dolphins were foraging at depth by the cardinal marker, before one of them disappeared. The remaining bottlenose dolphin travelled around the survey area in the last 45 minutes, foraging at depth, but was not seen in the next survey period.

Two bottlenose dolphins

Half way through the survey period, two bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling with regular surfacing, past the harbour wall in a northerly direction, before disappearing for the rest of the period.

Two bottlenose dolphins

At the very end of the survey period, two bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling past the harbour wall with irregular surfacing, thought to be foraging at whilst on the move. The pair, a mother and her juvenile calf, were seen foraging in the harbour past the survey hours.
