15/07/2016:26 Bottlenose dolphins, 2 Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: rain/overcast, wind direction: S, sea state: 1
7 bottlenose dolphins

2 groups of dolphins were first spotted travelling towards the harbour wall and another towards the cardinal buoy. For the first half of the survey behaviours were mostly travelling, during the second half there were more groups of individuals on both sides of the harbour wall and around the cardinal buoy displaying slow-moving behaviour such as foraging. The individuals around the buoy were observed leaping, lunging and chasing fish.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast, wind direction: S/SE, sea state: 2/5
8 bottlenose dolphins

An individual from the previous survey remained around the cardinal buoy for the majority of this survey. There were others seen travelling around the harbour wall area and another foraging offshore. The group by the wall displayed surface behaviour such as lunging and mingling, and an Atlantic grey seal was also spotted by the wall. Another group comprising of two individuals was also spotted foraging offshore about half way through the survey. Early into the second half of the survey another dolphin was traveling offshore.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, wind direction: S/SW, sea state: 1
2 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic grey seal

There were no sightings for the first half of the survey. In the second half an Atlantic grey seal was spotted for a short time in the water right next to the harbour wall. At the end of the survey two bottlenose dolphins were observed in the area; one was traveling towards the wall from the cardinal buoy, and the other foraging further out.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast, wind direction: S/SE/SW, sea state: 2/3
4 bottlenose dolphins

One of the individuals from the previous survey was observed traveling in an easterly direction towards the headland at the start of the survey. The next sightings were in the final 30 minutes of the survey where an individual offshore displayed surface behaviour such as lunging and leaping. Another group including one calf also appeared offshore and both groups began traveling east towards the headland.

2hr survey. Start time: 17:00
Weather conditions: overcast, wind direction: NW, sea state: 2
7 bottlenose dolphins

There were three groups of dolphins at the beginning of the survey; one individual travelling towards the wall from offshore, four more foraging, and two individuals displaying surface behaviour. The groups split up and joined together again throughout the survey and displayed a range of behaviours including chasing prey at the surface, foraging, traveling and other surface behaviours.
