15/07/2014 – Bottlenose Dolphins

2hr Survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/Dull. Sea state 2-3. Wind direction SW
One bottlenose dolphin.

At the beginning of the survey one bottlenose dolphin was seen travelling towards the fish factory. It was seen shortly after leaping in the same area.

2hr Survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Overcast progressing to sunny. Sea state 2-1. Wind direction W-NW
Two bottlenose dolphins.

Throughout the survey a mother bottlenose dolphin and her calf were seen in the bay. At the beginning of the survey they were seen travelling past the harbour wall into the harbour, where they foraged for some time near the swimming area. Towards the end of the survey they were seen foraging near to the cardinal buoy.

2hr Survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Sunny. Sea state 1. Wind direction NW-N
Four bottlenose dolphins.

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the survey. At the beginning of the survey two bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging near the cardinal buoy. Two more were spotted soon after travelling towards them from the west. The group of four then continued to forage around the cardinal buoy for the remainder of the survey.

2hr Survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Fair/Sunny. Sea state 1. Wind direction NW
Five bottlenose dolphins

At least four bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the survey. At the beginning of the survey three bottlenose dolphins including one calf were seen foraging and leaping near cardinal buoy, with another dolphin, identified through photos as ‘Nick’ foraging by the end of the harbour wall. A variable group of 2-4 dolphins were seen foraging near cardinal buoy for almost the entire survey, with several other small groups foraging in the bay and near the fish factory.

2hr Survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Sunny. Sea state 1. Wind direction SE
Six bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey two bottlenose dolphins were seen near the cardinal buoy, with a mother and calf in the bay near the harbour wall, and another individual in the entrance to the harbour. Two dolphins continued to forage near the cardinal buoy, with the mother and calf joining them. At around half an hour through the survey there were three individuals foraging and leaping in the bay, north of the harbour wall, with two dolphins travelling southwest towards Traeth Dolau. These five dolphins continued to move around the bay for some time, with dolphins seen foraging near the cardinal buoy, near the fish factory and to the north of the harbour wall for the rest of the survey.

2hr Survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: Sunny. Sea state 1. Wind direction W
Three bottlenose dolphins

Dolphins were seen throughout the survey, with one dolphin foraging near the fish factory and another travelling north from the harbour wall at the beginning of the survey. These individuals were both then seen travelling east, and then foraging together just off the coast from the fish factory and then near to cardinal buoy. Half way through the survey three dolphins were seen travelling west towards the fish factory where they foraged for some time before moving back to forage near the cardinal buoy.
