14/05/2016: Ten bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Four bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey period three bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling in an easterly direction north of the headland, thought to be searching for prey. Another bottlenose dolphin was seen leaping and splashing, before it travelled out of the survey area in a westerly direction.

Three bottlenose dolphins

Two bottlenose dolphins were spotted about 15 minutes into the survey taking long dives between headland and cardinal marker, thought to be foraging at depth. Half an hour later one bottlenose dolphin was spotted north of the headland travelling out of the bay in a westerly direction.

Three bottlenose dolphins

During the second half of the survey three bottlenose dolphins were briefly spotted between cardinal marker and headland, milling at the surface. A large number of gannets were also spotted about a mile north of New Quay, resting on the water and feeding.

Just before the end of the survey, one female Atlantic grey seal was spotted in the water north of the harbour wall.
