13/08/2017: 23 bottlenose dolphins, 4 Atlantic grey seals and 2 harbour porpoise – BIG 3

2 hour survey, start time 10:10
Weather conditions: sea state 1, visibility >10, light swell
Nine bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

A group of bottlenose dolphins were seen at the very start of the survey. The group were foraging in New Quay Bay and one member of the group seen leaping out of the water. Further along the coastline a lone dolphin was observed foraging followed by a sighting of a mother and calf pair. Towards the end of the survey an Atlantic grey seal was spotted swimming and another two dolphins were seen foraging.

The second survey of the day was very successful with sightings of the Cardigan Bay Big 3. The first sighting of the trip was of two bottlenose dolphins foraging in New Quay Bay. This was shortly followed by a dolphin leaping close to the headland. Further along the coastline two harbour porpoise were seen travelling. A group of 3 dolphins were later observed foraging before a sighting of a lone Atlantic grey seal in the water.

The first sighting of the survey was of a lone Atlantic grey seal bottling in the water. A group of 5 dolphins, including a mother and calf pair were then seen travelling slowly in a close group. Midway through the survey a male seal was observe bottling in the water shortly followed by a sighting of a lone bottlenose dolphin lunging and bow riding the boat.
