13/08/2013 – bottlenose dolphins

2 hour survey, start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/Dull, sea state 2-3, wind W/NW
Seven bottlenose dolphins, including three calves

At the start of the survey five bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were spotted travelling east from the fish factory. A mother and calf were also spotted close to the harbour wall travelling whilst foraging in a westerly direction. Within the next 15 minutes, two adults and two calves were seen a long way offshore travelling west and eventually disappeared behind New Quay headland.

Five bottlenose dolphins, including one calf

The survey began with one bottlenose dolphin foraging just off cardinal buoy which was then joined by another dolphin within the next 15 minutes which began foraging along the edge of the reef. Another lone dolphin was spotted travelling east 30 minutes into the survey. Half way through the survey, a mother and a calf were seen foraging on the reef and were seen slowly foraging around the harbour for the remainder of the survey.

Four bottlenose dolphins

Two bottlenose dolphins were seen at the start of the survey foraging just north of the harbour wall. These were joined by two more dolphins after 30 minutes who also started to forage around the same area. The dolphins slowly made their way towards the cardinal buoy throughout the second half of the survey where they slowly left the area one by one until only one dolphin was seen foraging at the end of the survey.

Four bottlenose dolphins

The survey started off well with a mother and a calf spotted foraging just east of the fish factory and another adult was also spotted foraging east of the harbour wall 15 minutes into the survey.  Half way into the survey two separate dolphins were seen foraging around the edge of the reef near the cardinal buoy another foraging just off the harbour wall. The mother and the calf the reappeared towards the end of the survey and were seen foraging with another adult bottlenose at the cardinal buoy.
