13/06/2016: 18 Bottlenose dolphins and 2 Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00

Weather conditions: overcast/rainy, sea state 2, wind direction S/SW/N/NW

Five bottlenose dolphins

Almost the beginning of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were sighted foraging at the deep around the fishery factory. Then they started to travel towards the open sea (ENE direction). Midday of the survey, two groups of bottlenose dolphins were spotted. The first group was coming from the sea and travelling towards the fishery factory. The second group was sighted near the cardinal buoy and started to travel towards the harbour wall. During the next 15 minutes the two groups joined together for a while, then they splinted again and took different directions. Two of them travelled fast towards the cardinal buoy, while one individual remained to foraging at depth near the fishery factory for the rest of the survey.

Six bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

After a while, a couple of bottlenose dolphins were spotted foraging to the depth in fishery factory area. The next 15 minutes a juvenile joined to the group to feed as well. Meanwhile one Atlantic grey seal was spotted swimming between the buoys line, headed to fishery factory. The bottlenose dolphins started to travelling in East direction. They dove for a long, surfacing at irregular intervals, thought to be searching for prey while on the move.

The next 15 minutes, a juvenile joined to the couple that was staying around the cardinal buoy and, all together, started to travelling towards the fishery factory. After reached it, all the dolphins were stopping just in front the factory. There they were foraging at depth and chasing their prey on the surface. A fish were seen jumped out from the water. After that the group were splinted and only two dolphins stayed in the study area. One individual kept to stay around the fishery factory, looking for preys in the deep, while the other dolphins travelling along the buoys line, searching for preys during on the move, before disappearing. In the middle of the survey only one individual didn’t leave the study area, kept going to foraging at the deep around the fishery factory. At the and of the survey, the individual started to travelling slowly towards the cardinal buoy, looking for preys while on the move.
