12/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair/sunny/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SW

One solitary dolphin was spotted in the first half-hour of the survey travelling toward than foraging near the cardinal marker. It was briefly joined in the bay by a leaping group of three bottlenose dolphins, before all the dolphins disappeared from the bay at around 10:00. In the last hour of the survey one female Atlantic Grey seal was spotted just North of the harbour wall and then in the last fifteen minutes of the survey a group of six dolphins with one juvenile moved in from near the fish factory.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction SW

The group spotted in the last fifteen minutes of the previous survey remained in the bay for the entirety of this survey with the group of six splitting into smaller groups which were spotted foraging near the harbour wall and cardinal marker. Some of the group were able to be identified on the wall, in particular the female Snowcap and her new-born calf as well as the large male dolphin known as Vader.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 1, wind direction SW

Of the group of six from the previous survey, only four remained in the bay for the start of this one, with two dolphins including a small juvenile foraging close to the harbour wall and two individuals foraging out toward the cardinal marker. These groups merged over the next hour to form an actively hunting group of four dolphins which were observed leaping and hunting close North of the harbour wall. The group of four stayed around this area for the remainder of this survey and were joined in the last fifteen minutes by a female grey seal just off the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: fair/overcast/sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S

The four bottlenose dolphins from the previous survey were spotted in the first fifteen minutes of this one however they soon moved offshore northwards and subsequently left the bay and the survey sight. No more dolphins were spotted during the survey, however at around 4:15pm a young female Grey seal was spotted bottling near to the fish factory.
