12/10/2015: 22 bottlenose dolphins and eight Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Sunny/fair, sea state 1, wind direction SE/NE/none
15 bottlenose dolphins and four Atlantic grey seals

At the start of this survey an Atlantic grey seal was seen near the cardinal buoy before disappearing from the survey area. Then half an hour later the survey area filled with bottlenose dolphins. There was a group of five dolphins including a juvenile mingling at the surface near the fish factory. There was also a group of four dolphins travelling SE between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy. In addition there was a single dolphin mingling at the surface near the harbour wall. There was also a grey seal seen beyond the fish factory and another seal was seen off the harbour wall. Into the next 15 minutes the group of four dolphins were seen travelling SE near the cardinal buoy and the single dolphin was still seen mingling at the surface near the harbour wall. The group of five split up into a group of three including a juvenile and a group of two adults and these both mingled at the surface of the water. A group of three dolphins then entered the survey area offshore and foraged. In the next 15 minutes the group of three including a juvenile were seen foraging near the harbour wall, whilst the group of two split up and one travelled east towards the cardinal buoy whilst foraging and the other travelled NW towards the fish factory whilst foraging. The other group of three dolphins remained foraging between the cardinal buoy and fish factory. In the next 15 minutes all but the group of three adult dolphins had left the survey area and these split up and a group of two remained foraging between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy and a single dolphin foraged between the cardinal buoy and the harbour wall. The group of two remained exhibiting the same behaviour into the next 15 minutes whilst the single individual foraged next to the cardinal buoy. In the final 15 minutes of this survey the single dolphin remained foraging next to the cardinal buoy and the group of two split with one dolphin foraging between the cardinal buoy and the fish factory and the other mingling at the surface near the fish factory. There was also a group of two dolphins travelling SE from the fish factory. There was also a grey seal seen between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/misty/fair, sea state 1, wind direction E
12 bottlenose dolphins and three Atlantic grey seals

There were dolphins present right from the beginning of this survey. A group of two dolphins were seen foraging beyond the fish factory as well as a single individual that was seen travelling east whilst foraging from the fish factory towards the cardinal buoy. As well as this a mother and calf group were seen mingling at the surface near the harbour wall. Also present during the first 15 minutes of this survey was a group of two dolphins foraging near the cardinal buoy. The single individual dolphin then joined with the two beyond the fish factory and travelled NE offshore. Whilst this was happening another mother and calf joined the previous mother and calf group and mingled at the surface near the harbour wall. Whilst this happened one of the two foraging near the carinal buoy left the survey area leaving one dolphin foraging in that area. This dolphin remained doing this into the next 15 minutes and the four dolphins including two juveniles remained mingling at the surface and the three offshore also began mingling at the surface. In the next 15 minutes another juvenile was seen with the previous group of four and they began leaping at the surface near the fish factory and another dolphin joined the individual near the cardinal buoy and they began travelling west towards the fish factory. Whilst this occurred the group of three remained mingling at the surface offshore. In the next 15 minutes the group of five travelled towards the fish factory then travelled NE away from the fish factory. Also a group of two were seen in the survey area just beyond the headland at the fish factory mingling at the surface before leaving the survey area. During this time a male seal was seen in the water beside the fish factory and a female seal was seen swimming NW between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy. The group of five was still seen into the next 15 minutes travelling NE whilst foraging offshore before they left the survey area. Then 30 minutes before the end of the survey a male grey seal was seen swimming SE near the harbour wall. Then nothing was seen for the remainder of this survey.
