12/10/14: Bottlenose dolphins and atlantic grey seals

12 bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

At the beginning of the survey a single atlantic grey seal was seen in the water off Traeth Gwyn. Shortly afterwards and for the remainder of the survey bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging in the bay, with two adults splashing and jumping close to the harbour wall early on, and towards the end of the survey as many as 12 dolphins were in the bay, including two calves, with behaviours of foraging and jumping and chasing prey.

16 bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey eight bottlenose dolphins (including one calf) were seen foraging near the cardinal buoy. Shortly afterwards more animals entered the bay leaving six adult dolphins and one calf foraging near the cardinal buoy, and six more adults in the bay north of the harbour wall. Dolphins remained in the bay for the rest of the survey, with five in front of the harbour wall, and five near the cardinal buoy by the end of the survey.

Four bottlenose dolphins

During the first hour of the survey four individual bottlenose dolphins came and went in the bay, all foraging near the cardinal buoy.

Weather conditions: sunny/overcast, sea state 4-2, wind N
Three bottlenose dolphins

Nothing was seen in the first three quarters of the survey, with three bottlenose dolphins foraging and leaping in the bay north of the harbour wall.
