12/09/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seal

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair-overcast, sea state 2-4, wind direction W/SW

The survey started off quietly with bottlenose dolphins not being sighted until an hour into the survey. A total of eight dolphins, including one calf, were observed foraging throughout the bay with some groups leaping out of the water and displaying splashy behaviour.

Weather conditions: fair/ overcast/sun and showers, sea state 3, wind direction W/SW/S

A group of six bottlenose dolphins were observed throughout the 2 hour survey, expected to be part of the same group as previously observed in the first survey of the day. The group consisted of five adults and one juvenile and were observed displaying foraging and leaping behaviours.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 2-3, wind direction SW

Five of the bottlenose dolphins viewed in the last survey were observed throughout the 2 hour survey, initially only one juvenile was viewed within the interacting group, however by 14:30 a second juvenile was spotted within the group. The group of dolphins were observed foraging and leaping close to both sides of the harbour wall during the survey.

Weather conditions: fair-rainy, sea state 2, wind direction SW/S

In total ten individual bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal were spotted, with the dolphins split in two groups, the first group containing the two juveniles previously spotted with the additional dolphins first being viewed at 15:15 when the group split and became less defined. Throughout the two hours the dolphins displayed foraging and fast travelling behaviours. At 16:15 an Atlantic grey seal was also spotted close to the harbour wall, it displayed bottling behaviours before diving not being seen again for the rest of the survey.
