12/08/2017: 25 bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic grey seal

Ten bottlenose dolphins

The first sighting of bottlenose dolphins occurred near New Quay headland and consisted of five dolphins, two of which were juveniles. They were seen leaping, socialising and surfing the waves that were coming into the bay! The next sighting was offshore slightly from the bay, where two separate groups were spotted. One group of two were foraging and bow riding, and the other group of three (including one juvenile) were seen lunging and foraging.

13 bottlenose dolphins

The first sighting of bottlenose dolphins occurred near the harbour wall, where three dolphins (including a calf) were seen foraging and leaping. A single dolphin was also seen foraging in the same area. The next sightings were offshore from the bay, of 2 separate groups. The first group of two dolphins was seen tail slapping, foraging and bow riding vessels. The second group of an adult and calf were spotted head slapping and bow riding. Five dolphins, including one calf, were then spotted on the way back in. They were seen lunging and socialising.

Two bottlenose dolphins

The first sighting occurred right off the end of the harbour wall, where one dolphin was seen foraging among the boat moorings and the rocks at the end of the wall. The second sighting was very close to the Traeth Gwyn beach, with the dolphin foraging in the shallows.

The only sighting of this survey was one Atlantic grey seal offshore near the headland.
