12/05/2016: Eighteen bottlenose dolphins and six Atlantic grey seals

Five bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey period, three bottlenose dolphins, among them a mother and calf, were observed leaping and splashing east of the headland for about 30 minutes. Then in the last 15 minutes of the survey two bottlenose dolphins, among them a mother and calf, were observed north of the harbour wall. They were seen travelling in a north-westerly direction, thought to be searching for prey while on the move.

Seven bottlenose dolphins and two Atlantic grey seals

At the beginning of this survey, the mother and calf were joined by two further bottlenose dolphins and were observed travelling out of the survey area in a westerly direction. Furthermore, an Atlantic grey seal was spotted bottling just of the headland. Half an hour later, three bottlenose dolphins were seen leaping and tail slapping between headland and cardinal marker. A female Atlantic grey seal was also spotted bottling and travelling in an easterly direction directly north of the harbour wall.

Six bottlenose dolphins

Halfway through the survey, two pairs of bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling between headland and cardinal marker. One pair travelled off in a northerly direction, while the other pair travelled towards the cardinal marker where they were joined by a mother and calf. They were seen taking long dives, thought to be foraging, north of the cardinal marker until the end of the survey period.

Six bottlenose dolphins and three Atlantic grey seals

Three bottlenose dolphins, including a mother and calf, were seen leaping by the headland in the first half hour of the survey. They were joined by another dolphin and were seen travelling towards the cardinal marker, thought to be searching for prey. Halfway through the survey, three Atlantic grey seals, two females and one male, were seen off the headland, diving and travelling in a north-easterly direction. Towards the end of the survey, two more bottlenose dolphins were seen north of the headland leaping and taking long dives.
